Let’s Chat About Hair Bushes

Hair brushes. And or brushing. It’s worth a conversation.

If you are reading this blog I’m going to venture a guess that you read other blogs about makeup, hair etc. Then you have probably read somewhere that it is now frowned upon to brush your hair with a hair brush. Ok, so what do you do with unruly hair?

Here’s the deal. I still use a hair brush. Actually, I use two. Plus I use a comb.

Oh heavens to Betsy you are all screaming. That is too much work AND you are yanking your tresses out of your head. To you I give a hair flip and say bye bye. Why do I ignore your screaming? Because it works. This method works for me because I have basically straight hair. As well as I prep my hair in advance of using any brush at all. Which brings me to the most knowledgeable part of this post.

What is more important than a hair brush? Do you know? It’s the WIDE TOOTHED COMB. Say it with me now..wide toothed comb. I’m pretty sure I own 3 of them. Where do you get them? The Dollar Store. Yes folks the Dollar Store. One of the the best features of these combs is that they have a sort of hooked bottom. Why is that great? It’s great because you can hang said comb in the shower.  Oh silly me why would I want to do that? Here it is, the big secret…you need it in the shower to PREP your hair. There, I said it again “to prep your hair”. Prep your hair for drying, styling, brushing whatever you want to do to it.

When you are in the shower washing your hair (we’ll get into the whole no need to wash everyday thing some other time) you will do your hair a great service by using the wide toothed comb to comb the shampoo, if you can and then the conditioner throughout your hair.

I said comb through the shampoo if you can because I realize not everyone’s hair is combable (made up word) when wet.  One of my bonus daughters can barely get a comb through it with conditioner because she is blessed with some gorgeous curls. But, the number one best favor you can do for your hair is to use the wide toothed comb on it with your conditioner. You will thank me and your hair will thank you.

As for brushing, do not brush wet hair. Simple. Don’t do it unless you want broken, frizzy hair.

Before you blow-dry again, wide toothed comb.

Personally I won’t blow dry without protection and my favorite has gone off the market and is now a black market item. I feel a lot like Elaine in Seinfeld when her preferred method of protection, the sponge, was taken off the market. My

supply is so low at this point I ask myself if my hair on a particular day “is it V05 worthy” and sometimes the answer is no and I throw the whole wet mess in a bun and don’t dry it.

But back to brushing. Of course there are times you need to brush. I’m a fan of the wide paddle brush. But at night, before I go to bed I use a natural bristle brush to distribute the oils though my hair to the ends. Which brings me to the topic of our next chat…co-washing.

Tell me, do you use a heat protecting spray before yo u blow dry? Do you use a brush?

Let’s Chat About Aging Hair

Let’s Chat About Aging Hair

Aging hair…

Isn’t that why we’re here? We are here because we are all getting older and our bodies are changing.

As I’ve mentioned  before my hair is no longer blue because I let it fade for my son’s upcoming wedding in October.  However, that doesn’t mean that I’m just ignoring the grey/blond/white/brown tresses and leaving them to their own devices.

Sure, I was experimenting with letting it all go grey but it isn’t going.  It’s muddy and frizzy and blah. Yes blah. If that isn’t bad enough, I made a judgement of another woman and that made me think harder.  You see, I was standing on line and I judged the couple in front of me as a kindly son and his Mom until the woman turned toward me and I saw her perfectly unlined face. It was hersilvery, white hair that made me judge her as “old lady” instead of a peer.  These “judgey” thoughts knocked me over.  First, I try really hard to not judge. It’s just a code I try by which I personally try and live. However, I really like my husband and don’t want him to be judged as a nice son taking his Mom to the movies. I’d like him to be proud to hang out with me.

But what can I do short of dyeing it all over? Well, I gave this some thought and here’s what’s happening. First, I’m super careful about keeping the frizz down to a minimum. This keeps even grey hairs looking more attractive.  To do this I use Ghost OilThis is not a sponsored post. I just LOVE this product.  To smooth it through I recommend a wide toothed comb.

Like this one from The Dollar Store. (Again, not sponsored just a fan)

If you don’t use a wide tooth comb for conditioner or for wet hair, GET ONE NOW.  Not even joking. It is critical for your hair. Keeps it from snarling, distributes product perfectly and helps prevent  breakage.

These are my number one “go to’s” until I can go blue again. But, I’m also going to do at home Clairol balayage.  Yup, at home.  It’s been done before. Do you remember “Quiet Touch” hair painting? me too. Let’s see how it goes alright?  I’ll let you know next week. If there’s no pix then you know it’s a DISASTER.

Let’s Chat Vivid Color Hair Care

Let’s Chat Vivid Color Hair Care

Hello Lovelies!

It’s always great coming by here to chat. I figured it was time to discuss caring for these new, fabulous, vivid hair colors. You might not realize that by using your everyday shampoo you will be stripping away all that gorgeousness. Yes, it’s true. That vivid blue, green, red or purple will succumb to ordinary suds. And after sitting in the chair for five hours having it done and paying who knows how much for the privilege, you want it to stay vivid for as long as possible, right?

Ok, number one thing to remember is COLD water. Yes, it sucks but hot water sucks the color from your hair. So suck it up and use cold. (did I really use the word suck that many times, I apologize)

Number two  NO SULFITES.  There are a lot of shampoos out there that, if you read the contents have no sulfites. Pantene has one and I’ve used it and it’s fine, not too expensive and I still use it on occasion. Something to notice when using this type of shampoo is that it does not suds up like all the shampoos in the world, so just take note of that and don’t think you need to pour on more for the suds.

Number three, and I know you can do this, wash your hair less often. Yes, we all grew up with the commercials for every night shampoo but seriously, that was merely to sell more product. It may take a few days to get used to not washing so get a good dry shampoo. If you can’t get that then dab some baby powder on the roots and brush through.  Don’t dump the container of powder on your part or you will defeat the entire purpose of greying gorgeously.

Finally, number four if you are so inclined, is purple shampoo. It definitely costs more but I’m super impressed with how it tints my blues back to blue and my grey skunk stripe looks more silvery.

Below, I will post some pix with links to  in case you wish to try them

As always please comment below so we can continue this chat. I’d love to know what you try and how you like it. Send pics of your vivid hair too!
