Yes, nails. As in our fingers and toes. Allow me to confess something horrible; I have been a nail biter for as long as I can remember. It’s really bad. So bad I have a couple of actually deformed nails.
But…drumroll please….I’ve stopped. Just stopped. It’s completely incredible to be honest. I can’t believe it myself.
Sure, I’ve stopped in the past and sometimes it lasts months and I have nice nails but then I just start gnawing away at them and it’s all over. It made me wonder if there wasn’t some kind of twelve step program for cannibals like me.
Now, I bet you are asking yourself how did this miracle occur and what makes me think it will last.
The answer is…Hypnosis. Yup, that’s right. Just like you see in the old movies. Well maybe not like that. I didn’t sit in front of some guru with a silver ball on a chain. Nope, I did it the modern way, You Tube.
Of course, there’s a chance I’m being hypnotized into becoming the next Manchurian Candidate but for healthy nails I’m willing to chance it.
Wouldn’t you love to know how I discovered this magic charm? Because I bet you might have a bad habit that you might like to shed?Ok, my journey started with a story in the New York Times about a phenomenon called ASMR. Have you heard of this? And by heard I’m being very literal. Hearing is what ASMR is about.
According to Wikepedia :Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. It has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia.
Who knew? Right? ASMR triggering videos are all over You Tube and I noticed that some of those helped me to fall asleep. Unfortunately, I’ve suffered insomnia and nightmares all my life and don’t like taking pills due to the sluggishness the next day. So, naturally I was pleased to find that these videos (I only listen to the audio with headphones) worked great.
As I searched around for more and more sleep help I found Podcasts for ASMR and then some specific for sleep. Fabulous. Next, I noticed that there are both videos and podcasts for dropping bad habits, drinking, eating etc. Well, a good friend of mine has been getting hypnosis for here exercise journey and it’s working. Knowing someone who has luck with hypnosis made me search for stop nail biting. Boom! There it was. There are actually several and it is up to you, the listener, to find which one works best. By trial and error I found one that worked great. It sounds like I’m listening to rain on the window and allegedly there are subliminal messages embedded within the audio.
Two days. Two days is all it took. I stopped biting. Simply stopped. After not listening for a couple days I noticed I was picking the skin on my nails so I put the earbuds on that night. No more biting.
Far be it for me to tell anyone to try any of this but here is my statement that it has worked very well for me. The sleep hypnosis also works and I really like sleeping without nightmares.
Once my nails look really nice, I’ll post some pix.
What about all of you? Do you bite your nails? Do you have insomnia? What about ASMR, does it trigger you?
